Your safety comes first — always
June 23, 2025
What to do if a stranger approaches you:
-
Trust your gut – If something feels off, it probably is.
-
Don’t engage – You don’t owe anyone your time or attention. If a stranger tries to talk to you or asks you to go somewhere with them, it’s okay to walk away or say “No.”
-
Never get into a vehicle – Even if they say they know your family or have a message for you.
-
Keep your distance – Step away and stay in public view where others can see you.
-
Tell someone immediately – Call your parents, a teacher, or another trusted adult right away.
In an emergency:
-
Call 111 (the NZ emergency number) if you feel unsafe or threatened.
-
Get to a safe place – Inside a shop, school, or anywhere with other people around.
Talk about it:
If something happens, even if you’re not sure it was serious, tell someone. It’s never wrong to speak up about a situation that made you uncomfortable.
Let’s all look out for each other and stay safe. If you ever need to talk or report something, we’re here to listen and help.
