Senior students 2026 subject selection

August 11, 2025

Over the next two weeks, senior students will be supported by Kaiako, Toka, Learning Area Heads, Deans and our Careers Department to select appropriate subjects for 2026.

The National Certificate of Educational Achievements (NCEA) is the main school qualification in Aotearoa New Zealand. NCEA has three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. The senior course booklet is designed to help you students plan their subjects so that they can achieve one of these qualifications.

Year 11 students select from Level 1 subjects to achieve the NCEA Level 1 qualification. All students must study English +/or Te Reo Māori and Mathematics.  Students choose 4 other subjects to complete their timetable.

Year 12 and 13 students choose 6 subjects.  To gain an NCEA qualification students must achieve the literacy and numeracy credits at Level 1. If a Year 12 or 13 student has not yet achieved Literacy and/or numeracy they will need to select the Literacy and/or Numeracy subject.

Year 12 students select from Level 2 if they have met the entry requirements for the subject. This will ensure they have the foundations for success. Some students will decide to take 18 to 24 months to achieve the Level 2 qualification.

Year 13 students select 6 subjects from Level 1 – 3 depending on the qualification they are working towards.  They will need to meet the entry requirements for the subject to ensure they have the foundations for success.

Students don’t need to have a specific career sorted, but general idea of where they are heading is good.  We encourage you to use the senior course booklet and discuss with them

·       What progress are you making in your current subjects? How many credits do you currently have?

·       What are your strengths and what are you really interested in?

·       What are some of the different careers that will best suit your strengths and interests?

·       What sorts of qualifications are needed for these careers?

·       Where are the courses that could get you these qualifications?
